PART 5

Toby awoke to soft music playing…and without thinking he reached out next to him only to find bare sheets where Chris should have been. Toby’s heart dropped for a second, feeling disappointment upon realizing Chris wasn’t beside him. It was in the middle of the night and darkness had fallen upon the room, with the only light created by the moon outside the window. Toby sat up and saw a shadowy figure sitting in a chair by the window.

“Hey…Chris…,” Toby rasped.

“Oh, sorry…did I wake you?” Chris asked quietly.

“Um…no…I don’t think so…wait, what are you doing?”

“I couldn’t sleep…thought I’d have a cig.”

Toby could then see faint swirls of smoke rising above Chris, lit from the moonlight streaming through the window. Chris had the curtains drawn back and the window open slightly, with the sounds of the waves rolling in towards the shore echoing in the room. He sat, looking out across the dark ocean, the small transitor radio beside him playing softly.

Toby got out of bed and walked over to Chris. He gently placed his hands on Chris shoulder and held them there. “Everything ok?”

Chris had mixed feelings about the entire situation. Normally any one he chose for a quick romp in the hay would have been gone by now…or if they sacked out afterward, he ‘sure as shit wouldn’t be preparing to offer to buy them breakfast’, he thought to himself. He felt thoroughly confused at the sudden turn of events. He wanted Toby to spend another day with him, but he didn’t want to look like a weakling by asking him to stay.

Chris puffed out some smoke, and kept his gaze out the window. “Yeah, sure…everything’s fine.” He paused to take another drag on the cigarette. “Why don’t you go back to sleep? Sleep as long as you want…but I thought I’d get something for you to eat before you left in the morning…”, Chris said, his voice fading.

“Oh…ok…”, Toby said softly.

Toby stood there with his hands on Chris’ shoulders, staring out through the window, studying the pattern of the waves lapping at the shore…and thinking about how he didn’t really *want* to leave in the morning, but surely he couldn’t overstay his welcome. ‘Chris is probably a busy guy...he wouldn’t want to hang around with me. This was just some fun…a good fuck…that’s it.’ And even as he was thinking it, Toby knew it wasn’t true.

Going back to the bed, Toby crawled under the blanket and was lulled back to sleep by the waves sloshing outside, the faint sound of Chris flicking his cigarette against the ashtray and the soft melody coming from the transistor radio.

********

Toby woke to the sound of the door shutting. He poked his head out from under the blanket and could smell the pancakes instantly.

“Hey, that smells good,” he said as he stretched out lazily in the bed.

Smiling, Chris passed him a plate with breakfast. “Yeah, there’s this great little diner just around the corner that makes the best flapjacks. I just got back.”

Toby smiled and took the food. Chris walked over to the small refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of orange juice. He poured two glasses and brought them back to the bed, handing one to Toby. Chris sat down on the bed and leaned up against the headboard, eating his breakfast. The radio was off now, and only the sounds of seagulls and ocean waves broke the silence.

The two men sat there quietly, until…

“Chris…” / “Toby, I…”

Both laughed at their awkwardness. Toby looked at Chris and grinned impishly, shaking his head and laughing.

“What were you going to say?” Chris asked smiling, his eyes glinting with laughter.

“You first.”

Taking a deep breath, Chris sighed. “Well, I was thinking…you know…if you wanted to…”

“Yes?”

Rolling his eyes a bit, Chris finally said, “You can stay...if you want…until you have to go back to the ship tomorrow afternoon…but only if you want to.”

Toby turned to his plate and ate a few more bites. Chris sat staring at him, waiting for a reply.

“Well…if you insist,” Toby finally said, winking at Chris.

“You asshole,” Chris joked, socking Toby on the arm. “Are you trying to make me look like an idiot?”

Toby laughed softly. “No, no…I was kinda hoping you’d ask actually.”

“Really…” Chris observed, raising an eyebrow at the blonde.

Backpedaling, Toby quickly added, “Sure…maybe you could, uh, show me the island or something…” Toby nervously chewed his eggs, waiting for Chris’ response.

‘Or something’, Chris thought. “Ok, that sounds great. You have all day, until tomorrow afternoon, right?”

“Right.”

Nodding, Chris smiled. “Ok…well, we could go for a hike around the island if you want…or we could just hang out on the beach, have a few drinks…and maybe go out to a club tonight…or stay in…?”

Toby raised his eyebrows, thinking that all sounded…great. All he wanted was to spend a little more time with Chris…everything else was just gravy. He felt…bigger…when he was around Chris...stronger somehow. He didn’t feel like the nerdy guy everyone had him pegged for…and Toby liked the feeling.

********

Chris was able to scrounge up some shirts and dungarees for the two to wear for the day.

“How do you know this guy? Your friend who lives here?” Toby questioned, as Chris tossed him the clothes.

Chris shrugged. “Just a pal I know…”

Toby didn’t push the question and just dropped it. “So, where to first?”

“Well, let’s just head out and see where we end up.”

The sky was threatening rain that morning, so they ended up hitching a ride with some locals, and didn’t go very far when Chris asked to be let off. Toby followed him as they walked towards the empty beach.

“What are we doing here?”

“Come on.” Chris took him by the hand. They came around the rocks and were met with a huge spray of water shooting straight into the sky.

“What the hell?!” Toby asked, taken aback.

Chris laughed. “Isn’t it neat? It’s the Halona Blowhole. It’s a lava tube where waves push through the tube and blows it upwards, kinda like a geyser.”

Toby stood watching the water spray up and out as each wave crashed in. “Huh. Pretty impressive.”

Chris gave him a look. “Hey, you wanted to see the island…this is the neatest thing I know that’s close, ok?”

Toby laughed and walked closer to the blowhole, letting the spray fall down upon him.

“You’re gonna get wet there, Toby.”

Looking up towards the grey sky as heavy raindrops began to fall, Toby chuckled. “Umm, I don’t think I have any control over that.” The raindrops fell harder as both men ran for cover. They made it to a rocky overhang and ducked under, laughing and leaning against the rock wall.

Toby was still laughing, closing his eyes and resting his head back while trying to catch his breath. Chris stood staring at the blonde, admiring how the wet shirt clung to his frame and watching the water droplets fall from his nose. Sliding in quickly, he wrapped his arms around Toby and kissed him.

Caught off guard, Toby jumped back a bit, but Chris only pressed closer. He held Toby against the rocks, holding him still and deepening the kiss. Toby melted into his arms and reached down to grab the Marine’s ass. Chris shoved his tongue deeper into Toby’s mouth and pushed his whole body against him. They stood there kissing and groping, only inches away from the downpour. Finally releasing the blonde, Chris pulled back and stared at him with dark, lustful eyes.

Toby watched as Chris swiftly dropped to his knees and unbuttoned Toby’s dungarees, sliding the pants down. Undoing the snaps on the cotton underwear, Chris freed Toby’s cock and deftly slid his mouth over it. Toby let his head fall back and he moaned quietly, reaching back, his fingers gripping at the edges of the rocks. Chris skillfully drew Toby in and out, his throat tightening with each thrust that Toby made in response.

Watching the blonde writhe in ecstasy, Chris was aware Toby was abou to come. He stood quickly to kiss Toby, while pumping his cock with his fisted hand. Toby cried out into Chris’ mouth as he came, his cum falling down to the rocky sand below.

As Toby slumped against him, breathing heavily, Chris directed his attention to kissing Toby’s throat. Chris kissed and licked along Toby’s scratchy jaw line, enjoying how it scraped against his cheek.

The rain finally stopped and Chris stepped away as Toby tucked himself into his pants and buttoned them back up. Toby looked intently at the man in front of him, who responded with just a cock of his head and big smirk before turning on his heels to go back out to the beach.

And again, Toby followed.

*****

The clouds broke to full sun by noon. The two men spent the rest of the day poking about the island, with Chris introducing Toby to some of the locals. They finished off the afternoon soaking in some late sun. Laid out on two towels back on the beach near the bungalow, Chris and Toby chatted as they listened to music on Chris’ radio.

“Have you been here long? How do you know so many people here?” Toby asked.

“I’m on a 3 week leave from Pendelton and came here to relax. What can I say, people like me.”

Toby laughed at the cockiness of Chris’ answer. “Buy why don’t you just wear your civies?”

“I get more dates when I wear the uniform," Chris said, winking.

Toby scoffed at the answer. “Ha, very funny. So, how much longer do you have in the service?”

“Just a couple more years…”

“Yeah, me too.” Feeling brave, Toby finally asked. “So, what’s your story?”

“My story?”

“Yeah, you know…where did you grow up, where did you go to boot, you know…”

Chris turned his head and looked out over the clear blue water. “What, are you writing a book? Come on Toby, let’s not talk about that stuff…I wouldn’t want to bore you with all that.”

“You wouldn’t bore me…”

“Just drop it, Toby. Let’s not ruin the mood.”

Toby was taken aback by the answer, but decided it was probably best he not press any further. It was obvious to him that Chris didn’t want to talk about it…and Toby didn’t want to mess up the time they had left together.

So, Toby said nothing and just rolled over, burying his head in his arms. After about a minute or so, he felt a hand slide up his back. He quickly looked up.

“Chris…what are you doing?” he whispered loudly.

Chris was lying on his side, propped up on his elbow. “There’s no one around, Toby. Everyone’s gone home…the sun will be going down soon.” He smiled and continued petting Toby’s back, sliding his hand up and down the pale skin.

Although still unsure, Toby reluctantly settled his head back onto his arms and began to allow himself to enjoy the simple feeling of Chris touching his back.

“Mmmm…” Toby mumbled. He could hear Chris chuckle.

“So, you hungry yet?”

Toby thought about it. “Yeah, any suggestions?”

“Sure…I know a few quiet places to choose from. We can grab a bite for dinner, and then we can come back here and relax…”

That sounded good to Toby.

********

After they left the small restaurant where they ate dinner, they ended up back at the Tiki-Lau. Sitting together at the bar babysitting beers, Toby heard someone call out from behind him.

“Toby, Toby, Toby…you *still* haven’t found a decent gal?” It was O’Reily.

Toby groaned quietly and turned to see Ryan with a girl on each arm…again…although it didn’t go unnoticed by Toby that they were different girls than from the night before. “I see you’ve been keeping yourself busy, O’Reily,” he said sarcastically.

“You know it, Squid.”

The girls wandered off to the powder room as Ryan sat down next to Toby. Ryan finally noticed Chris sitting next to Toby. He looked at Chris quizzically, muttering, “Hey…you’re the guy from last night, how's it going?”

“Oh, just fiiiiine,” Chris drawled secretively. Calling out to the man behind the bar, he shouted, “Hey bartender, these beers aren’t gonna do it tonight, bring us something stronger!”

Toby shook his head and laughed. The bartender promptly brought them fresh drinks, which both Chris and Toby quickly downed.

*******

After about 4 or 5...or 6 more drinks (both men had lost count), Chris and Toby were completely snockered, and Ryan was long gone. They somehow made they’re way out of the bar and outside onto the sidewalk. Leaning against each other and cracking up with laughter, the two men stumbled back to the bungalow.

*******

(the next morning)

Toby woke the next morning in a haze. Thinking back on the night before, he could only remember bits and pieces. The main thing he remembered was Chris making love to him…but he did so gently and unhurried, as if they didn’t have a care in the world.

~~~~~~~~
(the night before)
They had managed to get back to the bungalow and collapsed on the bed. Toby remembered passing out while Chris undressed him. He woke up later with Chris laying next to him, running his fingers up and down Toby’s forearm, gently mapping the muscles and veins. Toby turned to kiss him and they kissed for what felt like forever, at least to Toby. His head was swimming in the booze, but he had a feeling that wasn’t the only reason he felt different. He felt a connection to Chris, and while he couldn’t put his finger on it, he didn’t want to lose it…even though he had to leave. Toby knew he would have to see this man again…somehow.
~~~~~~

Chris laid there watching Toby after he had passed out. As much as he longed for him, Chris didn’t want to take advantage of Toby while he was asleep so he just waited and enjoyed being able to simply look at Toby. He waited until Toby woke up, and when Toby turned and kissed him, Chris knew what he had to do. He concentrated on pleasing Toby, because he realized when he saw Toby was satisfied, he too felt satisfied. It was an unusual revelation for Chris. Up until that point he had always followed his dick…and this time he had a feeling he was following his heart.

~~~~~~~~
(that afternoon)
Toby reluctantly slipped back into his dress whites and was getting ready to leave the bungalow and head back to the ship. Neither men said much to the other…neither knew what to say. The morning had been spent laying in bed, each man just listening to the other breathe.
Finally breaking the awkward silence, Chris looked at Toby and drug out, “Well…I could say it was nice knowing you…”
“…buuuuuuuuuut?” Toby asked, confused.
“But I’m not going to say that…because I’m not *done* knowing you.”
Toby was confused and then his face filled with a soft, gentle smile. “Is that so, Keller?”
“That’s so…Squid.”
Toby laughed. They promised each other that they would write one another and keep in touch, and try to meet up again in the winter.
“Now, don’t you flake out on me there, Beecher. We have a date. New Year’s Eve, 1956. You and me, right?”
Toby nodded. “It’s a date.”
********
The sailors had all piled back on the ship and were ready to leave. As they pulled out of the harbor with the sun setting in the west, the sailors waved to the kids running along the docks, and waved to the gals they left behind who were shaking their scarves and hankies in the air to say goodbye.
Toby stood on the deck, enjoying the picturesque sunset and feeling the cool ocean breeze on his face. All the other guys went their separate ways, some to their bunks, others to their assigned duties. As the ship rounded the south side of the island, Toby saw the spray near the shore and recognized it instantly.
He stood watching the Halona Blowhole spray the water into the red sky, remembering the day before. And then, there on the beach…Toby saw him.
Chris.
He was standing at parade rest, his arms folded neatly behind his back watching the ship go by. Toby was shocked to see him there and quickly waved to him, catching Chris’ eye.
Chris saw Toby, and acknowledged him…by giving a quick salute. Chris laughed softly. “This is not over, not by a longshot,” he said to himself.
Standing there listening to his transistor radio as he watched the ship sail away, he couldn't help but smile as he heard the soft melody coming from the radio:
See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember darling all the while
You belong to me
See the market place in Old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
But remember when a dream appears
You belong to me
I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too, and blue
Fly the ocean in a silver plane
Watch the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember 'til you're home again
You belong to me
